BTEC sUBSIDIARY DIPLOMA IN it (EDEXCEL/Level 3)
Course Overview
The BTEC Sub Dip requires students to compolete six units of coursework over two years. The units focus on both practical skills and theory and students must pass all units. There is no examination during the two years students take to study the required material. The units covered provide a good mix of ICT and Computing themed topics along with an element of business.
Students may "bank" the grades they have achived for the units covered in Year 12 and achieve the Certificate which is equivalent to an AS Level qualification.
Units Covered
Unit 1: Communication & Employability Skills for IT
The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners understand both the personal attributes valued by employers and the principles of communicating effectively whist developing effective communication skills and addressing their own personal development needs.
Unit 2: Computer Systems
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the components of computer systems and develop the skills needed to recommend appropriate systems for business purposes and set up and maintain computer systems.
Unit 31: Computer Animation
The aim of this unit is to ensure learners understand types of animation and their uses and develop the knowledge and skills required to use software techniques to design and implement different types of animation.
Unit 8: e-Commerce
The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners know the technologies involved in e-commerce, understand the impact of e-commerce on organisations and on society, and that they are able to plan e-commerce strategies.
Unit 18: Database Design
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the features of relational databases and to develop the skills necessary to design, create, populate and test a relational database incorporating advanced features.
Unit 28: Website Design
The aim of this unit is to enable a learner to understand web architecture and the factor that affect its performance and to be able to design and create interactive websites.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 5 GCSE A*-C including English and Mathematics together with at least a C grade in GCSE ICT or a Merit on the OCR Nationals

1 – 2 Years
Assessment Method
100% coursework. Students must complete all 6 units to at least a pass grade to achieve accreditation. Completing Units 1, 2 and 31 in Year 12 will allow students to achieve an AS equivalent qualification. The qualification is graded Distinction, Merit or Pass.
Examination Details
There are no examinations for this qualification. Assessment is based fully on coursework portfolios.
Extension activities and where to find them
All students should be able to access the lesson resources and other relevant materials which are placed on the P: Drive.
Where to get extra support
Teaching staff are always available to provide extra support and guidance. A significant bank or resources and templates are available to all students in the P:Drive
Catch Up Classes
Catch up classes run periodically through the year and provide learners with a hugely valuable opportunity to receive extra one-to-one support and complete outstanding work. These are advertised throughout the year.
